1974-1977 Porsche 911: Air-cooled On A Budget
PCA—In this edition of Test Drive News, a monthly newsletter for PCA Test Drive participants, we examine an era of the 911 that was all but forgotten in the mainstream until recently: The 2.7-liter 911s from 1974-1977.

If you want to be the owner of an air-cooled 911 on a budget, look no further than this generation. Despite looking very similar to the 911 SC that succeeded it in 1978, the 911 2.7s (911, 911S, and 911 Carrera) received a bad reputation due to engine problems and other factors. These include broken or snapped head studs; power-sapping, reliability-reducing smog equipment; the first 5-mph “accordion” bumpers; less horsepower than some (but not all) earlier 911s; heavier weight; and more. The engine’s reputation of spotty long-term reliability hurt used-car values the most. The thing is, if a 911 2.7 is on the road today, it’s probably had the fixes to make it reliable. And because prices of air-cooled 911s keep going up, a 1974-1977 911 is still as great a value as it was 10 years ago.
