1984-89 911 Carrera: The Pinnacle of Type 911
PCA—In this edition of Test Drive News, a monthly newsletter for PCA Test Drive participants, we examine the 1984-1989 Porsche 911 Carrera.

The Porsche 911 Carrera was the pinnacle of development of the original Type 911 — the two subsequent generations of air-cooled 911s were different enough to warrant new model designations used internally by Porsche (964 and 993). Though the aging 911 had been in production for two decades when the Carrera came out, constant, gradual development over the years had refined the 911 into its best iteration to date. A larger displacement flat six with more than 200 horsepower endowed it with quick acceleration, while a new digital engine control unit by Bosch ensured smooth, trouble-free operation. Reliability issues that had plagued the 1974-1977 911 2.7 and 1978-1983 911 SC had largely been solved by the time the Carrera came out. It may cost a bit more than its immediate two predecessors, but the much-improved 911 represents a great value and is the one to have if you can foot the bill.
