Porsche 987: 2005-2012 Boxster and Cayman |
PCA—In this edition of Test Drive News, a monthly newsletter for PCA Test Drive participants, we examine the 2005-2012 Porsche 987
Boxster and Cayman, the second-generation of the automaker's mid-engined, water-cooled flat-six-powered platform.
The Boxster was first introduced in 1997 with the internal designation of Type 986 and was sold through model year 2004. In 2005, the 987 Boxster was released, looking fairly similar to the model it replaced in spite of Porsche's claim that it was mostly new. While the Boxster and
Boxster S were launched as 2005 models, those who were hoping for a coupe version would have to wait until 2006, when the Cayman S was released. The base Cayman was launched a year later, rounding out the 987 lineup. Overall, the 987 was a welcome improvement over the 986. Engines experienced fewer failures of the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing — the 986's Achille's heel — and once the 987 received a new engine without an IMS for 2009, Porsche had solved the most prominent problem it had
experienced with its water-cooled flat sixes. Though the 987 has not experienced the depreciation of its predecessor — and likely never will — they're a great value starting in the mid-to-high teens for the earliest, higher-mileage examples, and go up from there.
